About the Artist

Hi. I'm Reed Slater. Since I was young, I have been interested in making and selling things I create to people. In art school, I studied industrial design. I learned to use industrial processes to create products that people can interact with, but I didn't figure out how to make art with teabags until years later.
My life was interrupted when a 30 foot fall left me in a coma with broken bones. My head hit the ground so hard that my brain bled. It took me a long time to recover. With a traumatic brain injury, I have been unable to work outside my studio, and the supplemental income from Social Security is barely enough to live on.
I’ve been able to turn my situation into an advantage, however, by using the time I wasn't in an office to put my artistic talents to work and produce products that people love. Because I am involved with every step of the process, I have been able to support both my art and my life, and to live the way I want. For that, I am grateful.
Founding Teascarf Brooklyn in 2012 was a rewarding beginning, giving me a chance to introduce my designs to Brooklyn and the world. It has been a long journey, from creating designs on paper, to developing them into quality products such as pillow covers and scarves.
Thank you for joining me on my life's journey by appreciating and supporting my work.
